a4e - if someone gave me an all expenses paid trip back to go back to Bali, I would probably say no thanks. I have seen one or two programmes recently showing how bad tourism has made it and it will never have the innocence I remember.

We were invited into a traditional Balinese house back then. Also, to the funeral of the Queen of one of the "kingdoms" and that of her sister at the same time. Quite an experience
*mind you, someone did nick my best tee shirts off the washing line in the courtyard of the place where we stayed in Bali, so that was annoying….

Kite - I’m sure you’ll love it!! Surrey Bob - it’s so much more developed now than it was back then, Kuta seems to be like the costas now, whereas I remember it as basically a village with home lodges and bars, albeit full of Aussies as it was cheaper for them to fly to Bali for a lovely holiday than to go to the Gold Coast. I’d love to go to Ubud again - it still looks gorgeous!!

No excuse REPD, your mother being there, even if in labour, would have counted

CW once had a go at me for missing Dartford in the 1975 London Senior Cup, despite me not being born for another 5 hours after the full time whistle...

nervo - the attenuation tanks must be huge…. I bet that’s not the only game that’ll be delayed because of thunderstorms - anyone who’s ever been to America in the summer (especially Florida and other southern states) will almost certainly have experienced the convectional rainfall, it can be spectacular. I recall being in Bali for a while in 1982, and every day at around 2pm the shops/stalls would all close up just before a torrential 1 hour or so long downpour, after which they’d all open up again whilst the gutters took all of the surface water away within minutes. Amazing days - backpacking across south east Asia for a few months with no mobile phone or satnav or anything - just paper tickets and an occasional pay phone…

Where was the England match that was postponed for 24 hours. Poland?
Hash, you should invite my brother round. Last time he looked after my cat when I was away pursuing the high life, there were loads of £1 coins in my sofa, presumably after he adopted a horizontal position. Went toward my next trip
